Subfloors and Pho
Reno Ridiculouso: Full Speed Ahead and Damn the Torpedos!
Food Mood: Pho and doughnuts in the sun
In March my brother-in-law lets us know that he’ll be coming
for four days to help the hard-working Hubby to lay the tile and possibly even
install the kitchen cabinets (let’s not get overly optimistic here people, it’s
never served us before!). And so, The
Hubby advances into hyper speed. The
drywall gets finished, everything painted, the basement stair steps begin to be
realigned, the sub floor gets laid in the kitchen and dining room. Whoo Hoo!
And then The Hubby turns his eyes to our wee powder room,
which we’ve mostly been completely ignoring in the favour of spaces that we
need right away, like, say, THE GD KITCHEN!
The powder room was our very ill placed ( a good 15 feet
down the hallway from the main entrance) closet up until recently, when we
stole 3 feet from the kitchen to create a main floor powder room. It’s the only area of the house that has
never seen any sort of renovation, whatsoever.
So, perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that when the Hubby cuts out the
old hardwood flooring in there to lay new cement board for the tile, there is
nothing under the hardwood. Nada. Rien.
Big fat zero. No subfloor at all,
just bloody hardwood laid on top of bloody beams. Sigh.
This reno is just the gift that keeps on giving. After a night of railing against the
injustice of the thing, the Hubby pulls up his pants and goes back to it and
comes up with a solution. And just like
that, all the subfloors are laid and we’re onto tile and flooring. Hurray!
But it’s a flurry of bloody activity and the Little Girl and
I have been invited to stay the heck
out of the way. I’m providing food and
clean clothes, but otherwise, staying clear. So, we’re out one afternoon
searching for a new bike for Little Girl who has grown at an alarming rate, and
new boots for me. Alas, no luck on
either. However we stumble upon a gem of
a place that does home made doughnuts, nine different kinds, in two sizes at
that. Little Girl settles on a large
powdered sugar doughnut with real raspberry jam. I chose an apple doughnut with caramelized
icing on top for me and a classic boston cream with thick dark chocolate for
the Hubby. And it is glorious! Little Girl and I walk down the street on
this sunny, chilly winter day, laughing as the powdered sugar gets everywhere,
and life is good!
We can feel spring coming in the sunshine and hope is in the
air.
PHO in the crockpot
Carton of pho stock (they make this now, yeah!)
2 cups of water
Thinly sliced green onions
Thinly sliced green cabbage (about a quarter of a head)
Slivered carrots
Cook all of this in the crockpot for six hours or so
Then throw in a couple of cups of thinly sliced steak
(whatever cut your budget runs to), some baby bok choy and cook for about an
hour on high. Add some hot sauce to
taste when you serve
