RePlan the Plan: the Ceiling Edition

Reno Ridiculouso= Reno Expensivo Food Mood: Still Doin’ it.   Still Eating.   Still Cooking Ok, so the cool tin tile ceiling was an awesome idea.   But the Hubby and I have a problem.   We are REALLY BAD at doing the cheap version of things.   We want this to look awesome, it’s the dream room, the last thing that we really haven’t downgraded.   And so , we are stuck.   The ceiling tiles that we like and the crown mouldings (does that word have a u in it?   I don’t know…) to complete the transition to the walls are going to be $1600.    And we just can’t justify it. Nope.   There are limits to all things are apparently we just found ours. I quietly cry to myself and the Hubby puts forth one of those ALL OUT WE’RE GOING DO THIS OR DIE TRYING days.   And he is epic.   And in one short weekend he finishes that dining room ceiling mudding and sanding.   We hire the awesome neighbours from across the ...

Subfloors and Pho

Reno Ridiculouso: Full Speed Ahead and Damn the Torpedos! Food Mood: Pho and doughnuts in the sun In March my brother-in-law lets us know that he’ll be coming for four days to help the hard-working Hubby to lay the tile and possibly even install the kitchen cabinets (let’s not get overly optimistic here people, it’s never served us before!).   And so, The Hubby advances into hyper speed.   The drywall gets finished, everything painted, the basement stair steps begin to be realigned, the sub floor gets laid in the kitchen and dining room. Whoo Hoo!   And then The Hubby turns his eyes to our wee powder room, which we’ve mostly been completely ignoring in the favour of spaces that we need right away, like, say, THE GD KITCHEN!    The powder room was our very ill placed ( a good 15 feet down the hallway from the main entrance) closet up until recently, when we stole 3 feet from the kitchen to create a main floor powder room.   It’s the only a...

Cop Out Like a Boss

Reno Ridiculouso: That’s it!   NO MORE SANDING AND MUDDING! Food Mood: Quiche.   Just That. In the toaster oven, sorry crockpot lovers After three weeks of mudding and sanding, (why do they call it mudding and taping?   Taping doesn’t suck.   You know what sucks?!   Sanding.   That’s what sucks! It’s up my freakin’ nose) we’re done.   I mean, here’s the thing.   We aren’t done.   But we are DONE.   The walls are mostly done but we still have the whole powder room to do and the ceilings of the dining room and kitchen The kitchen ceiling is going awesomely.   Hubby and I have developed a system that minimizes the shoulder/neck damage that either of us incur.   But the ceiling of the dining room is super high and super challenging and we both just keep trying and bailing out. Which is when we start throwing things overboard . It begins with a conversation about how much we love those fake tin ceiling tiles w...
